Storm King’s Thunder. Session 31: Svardborg

16th Ches 1458DR

The Griffons pondered on where to go next, eventually settling on the Uthgardt longhouse. Scouting from outside, Fenris and Amadeous saw around 8 of the tribesmen inside, some of them standing around a cooking pot with the rest tending to 2 huge mammoths at the back of the hall. Korrak decided to make an attempt at subterfuge, explaining how he would pretend to be a newly-captured thrall who could serve them poisoned ale. The rest of the Griffons opted to wait outside.

Preparing the drinks, Korrak headed into the longhouse and introduced himself. The chief was immediately suspicious but Korrak managed to convince him that he had arrived on the recent raid from Fireshear and had been instructed to bring drinks to the tribesmen. The chief accepted the drinks, but insisted that Korrak drink with them. As the chief shouted “Skål!” they all drank, with Korrak pouring most of his drink over himself, swishing his hair dramatically as he did so. The chief winced a little bit - saying that the ale must be off as it tastes bad and one of the tribesmen started feeling very unwell. Korrak invited him outside and the unwell tribesman agreed, however as soon as he saw the rest of the Griffons outside he shouted out and weapons were drawn.

What followed was a brutal battle in which the mammoths rampaged through the longhouse. Amadeous tried to mount and ride one but was thrown off. Fenris then managed to quickly climb up it’s trunk but was also thrown off and trampled beneath it’s feet. However the Griffons prevailed and afterwards the longhouse stood silent. They picked their way through the remains, finding gold and gems but otherwise little else of value.

After this they decided to go to the longhouse that seemed to be a prison. This time they opted against stealth and rushed into the hall, cutting down the Frost giants and their attendants before the alarm could be raised. Here they found several sea elves in cages at the back. Speaking to their leader, they found out that her name was Thalassia Summersea and they had been captured in a raid on their settlement to the north. The Jarl had interrogated them, seeking to find the location of the Ring of Winter but the elves had no knowledge of it’s location. Fenris told her that there was food in the longhouse to the south and Uthgardt boats moored outside. Thalassia expressed her gratitude for their release, directed her fellow elves to reclaim their equipment and headed outside for provisions.

The Griffons then went south, investigating the temple. Peering inside, they saw a large hall with a huge statue of a frost giant at the end, with benches and chairs arranged in rows in front of the statue. huge pile of trophies and coins. Studying the statue, Fenris recognised the statue as Thrym (son of Annam and revered by Frost giants) and found a pile of trophies and coins at it’s feet, seemingly in tribute. He could not find any traps set up. Fenris and Amadeous helped themselves to the tribute, while Korrak took the opportunity to relieve himself on the statue. They felt the world darken slightly as Thrym cast judgment on them for their disrespect. Fenris felt a curse upon him and the frigid air suddenly felt a lot colder. He was cursed with vulnerability to Cold. Looking through the tribute he found a Potion of Cold Resistance and looking up at the statue he was almost certain that it bore a smirk on it’s face that wasn’t there before.

They pocketed the rest of the treasure and prepared to investigate the rest of the island.
